October 2nd The lasers used in "Alien" were borrowed from The Who. The band was using the soundstage next door at the time. October 3rd Mister Rogers saw "Night of the Living Dead" and "Dawn of the Dead". George Romero worked on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. October 4th Bela Lugosi was buried in his Dracula cape. Vincent Price related the story that a rather drunken Peter Lorre leaned over to him at the funeral and asked, "Do you think we should drive a stake through his heart just in case?" October 5th "Revenge of the Creature" was Clint Eastwood's first film appearance.   October 6th Jack Pierce used standard "beauty" make-up for Elsa Lanchester in "The Bride of Frankenstein". When you eliminate the hair (her own teased over a wire frame) and neck scars, you have the look of a Hollywood starlet. October 7th The inspiration for the house in "Psycho" is a 1925 painting by Edward Hopper, "House by the Railroad". Alfred Hitchcock greatly admired Hopper's work. October 8th Any similarities between "Mad Love" and "Citizen Kane" are purely intentional. Famed cinematographer Greg Toland worked on both films. October 9th The two leads of "In Cold Blood" both continued on gruesome career paths. Robert Blake was accused of murder. Scott Wilson went on to kill zombies as Herschel in "The Walking Dead". October 10th Young Donnie Dunagan, who appeared in "Son of Frankenstein", is also the voice of Bambi. October 11th Ben Chapman, one of the actors who played "The Creature from the Black Lagoon", was a former Tahitian dancer. (Seen here doing Jackie Gleason's signature dance move.) October 12th Bela Lugosi fell into the spiral of drug addiction and eventually entered a sanitarium for treatment. Lugosi was successful in rehab, but he was broke. Upon hearing this, Frank Sinatra stepped in and paid all the bills. October 13th The set from "King Kong" was used in "Gone With The Wind" during the burning of Atlanta scene. October 14th Glenn Strange broke his leg during the filming of "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" and Lon Chaney Jr. filled in at the last minute. October 15th Vincent Price (Egghead) and Alan Napier (Alfred) didn't meet on the set of "Batman". They had worked together previously in "The Invisible Man Returns". October 16th Look closely at the Merry-Go-Round hat on "Beetlejuice" and you'll see Jack Skellington from "The Nightmare Before Christmas". October 17th Karl Freund, cinematographer and director of "The Mummy" later worked on "I Love Lucy". October 18th This bolt of lightning appears in dozens of movies. October 20th On the last day of filming "Bell from Hell" (1973), director Claudio Guerín fell from the bell tower to his death. October 21st The roof has changed, and the iconic windows are gone, but the house from "The Amityville Horror" is still standing in Tom's River NJ. October 22nd The group in the nighclub scene of "Blacula" (1972) is the Hues Corporation. Two years later, they had a #1 hit with "Rock the Boat". October 23rd Bela Lugosi was a prominent classical actor on the European stage, portraying romantic leads, Shakespearean characters, and even Jesus Christ. October 24th Screen blood is sweet and delicious. In black and white films, chocolate syrup was often used. In color, corn or sugar cane syrup is mixed with food coloring. Peanut butter is sometimes added to simulate chunks of human flesh. October 25th Horror icon, Christopher Lee, was considered for the part of James Bond in "Dr. No". October 26th James Whale directed both the horror film "Frankenstein" and the musical "Show Boat". Whale brought horror elements reminiscent of "Frankenstein" into the "Old Man River" sequence October 27th Joe Hill King, who played Billy in "Creepshow", grew up to be a horror writer just his father, Stephen King. October 28th The fictional Camp Crystal Lake in "Friday the 13th" is an actual boys and girls scout camp located in Blairstown, NJ. It is still active today. October 29th The original working title for "Tremors" was "Land Sharks". It was changed to avoid confusion with the sketch on Saturday Night Live. October 30th After being rejected for the role of Luke Skywalker, Robert Englund suggested to his friend, Mark Hamill, to try out for the part. October 31st Bela Lugosi never learned to drive. The studio or his wife would pick him up. When they were unavailable, he would go to the cigar store on rollerskates.
